The AANC and POISE are pleased to present the following Report:

Neighborhood Attraction Factors Impacting the Young Professional African American Population in the City of Pittsburgh

Why are African-American millennials leaving?

What are the “push and pull factors” of those who stay and those who leave?

What are the desirable characteristics of neighborhoods that would make African-Americans who have a choice in where they live decide to live there?

These are the core questions that led to a report to The POISE Foundation on behalf of the African American Neighborhoods of Choice (AANC) research group. The findings within Neighborhood Attraction Factors Impacting the Young African American Population in the City of Pittsburgh, released in February 2017, are based on census data as well as focus groups, interviews and surveys of hundreds of residents in the City of Pittsburgh as well as its surrounding suburbs. The data was compiled by the University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) in an effort to assist The POISE Foundation and AANC in investigating which factors influence where African American residents live, work and recreate. We hope this initiative promotes conversations that will bring attention to the essential elements needed retain and attract a more diverse population to the City of Pittsburgh, and subsequent action to bring it to fruition.
